THIMPHU, June 4 (Xinhua) -- Bhutan is to observe "Pedestrians' Day" across the country on Tuesday to mark the World Environment Day.

According to the notification from the Royal Bhutan Police, Traffic division, all the core urban town areas across the country will be closed for traffic.

In Thimphu city the main traffic routes such as Chang-Lam and Norzin-Lam will be closed for traffic from 8 a.m. in the morning till 5 p.m. in the evening, as per the notification. However, emergency service vehicles such as public transport buses and ambulances will be allowed to ply on the two main routes.

To mark the day, several plantation programmes and cleaning campaigns were also planed across the country on Tuesday.

World Environment Day is a United Nations'day to encourage awareness and action for protection of environment across the globe. While Bhutan celebrates June 2 as its social forestry day and conducts mass trees plantation and cleaning campaigns, it also mark the environment day.

This year the environment day will be celebrated with the theme "Beating Plastic Pollution."

Bhutan is no exception when it comes to plastic pollution. Although not a major challenge, plastic pollution is becoming an increasing problem for the Himalayan kingdom.
