SUVA, Dec. 30 (Xinhua) -- Fiji police have penalized 84 drivers for speeding in the last 24 hours as the traffic police operation in the festive season continues.

Fiji police Director Traffic Mahesh Mishra said Monday a total of 131 Traffic Infringement Notices was given between 6:00 am Sunday until Monday.

Four drivers were fined for careless driving, one for not wearing a seat belt, three for driving with an expired license and two for failure to produce a license.

The police also inspected 230 vehicles during its operation.

Mishra said the police aims to address this issue as the "Stop Slaughter on Fiji Roads" campaign continues.

Fiji's Land Transport Authority (LTA) together with the Fiji police force and Accident Compensation Commission (ACCF) launched a festive season road safety campaign with the theme "Stop Slaughter on Fiji Roads" earlier this month.

The campaign shows graphic images that have been used to get the message across in a very direct way to maximize the impact of the accident images so people could be more aware.

Earlier this month it was reported that 19 fatalities on roads in Fiji this year was caused by speeding, which remains a major concern for law enforcers.

Mishra again reminded drivers not to drink and drive and not to speed-drive during the festive season and that most of the accidents were happening on good roads.
